For Immediate Release

Singapore, 20 Feb 2022 – TheSmartLocal (TSL) has teamed up with Mediacorp to launch Jiak Kentang (中文行不行), the local publisher’s first ever Chinese language series. This back-to-school themed game show, published on meWATCH, challenges the Chinese proficiency of millennials and influencers by putting them through various rounds of activities that test their vocabulary and articulation.

Bryan Choo, TSL’s Managing Director said, “It’s great to see our first foray into vernacular content doing so well and marks yet another great collaboration with Mediacorp. This is the start of our longer-term plan to open up pure vernacular channels on YouTube this year.”

Jiak Kentang pits teams against each other to crown the best students of the class, with new guest stars every episode joining a fixed cast of TSL personalities.

YES 933 DJ Hazelle Teo and Mediacorp Artiste Herman Keh hosted the series by taking on the role of a Chinese Teacher and Discipline Master respectively. The series’ guest line-up includes local Youtubers Aiken and Nina, as well as Mediacorp second-generation stars Chen Yixi and Benjamin Tan.

Each episode of Jiak Kentang features games that transport contestants back to Chinese lessons in their schooling days, such as the iconic dictation (听写) and testing their knowledge of Chinese idioms (成语).

The 6-episode series, with full episodes now up on meWATCH and Mediacorp’s Youtube channel, runs for 15 minutes on average and has garnered over 222,000 views on Youtube since its release on 17 January 2022. It has received praise from viewers on its novel way to push for higher Mother Tongue proficiency among Singaporeans.

TSL aims to take Jiak Kentang as the first step in paving the way for more multi-language series in the online landscape, to continue creating educational video content for Singapore’s youths.
