Singapore, 26 July 2021 – Commissioned by Mediacorp, local media publisher TheSmartLocal (TSL) has released The Algorithm, a six-episode drama series. The series transports viewers into an alternate universe that removes one’s ability to choose lifelong partners. Instead, relationships rely on an algorithm to pair compatible individuals together to sustain a nation’s population. The series features a strong cast and line-up of personalities, such as Shawn Thia, Xenia Tan, Marcus Mok, Eswari Gunasagar, Aaron Khaled, Brenda Tan (from TSL) and Zhin Gazali (from TSL).
“This is the biggest drama production TSL has done so far, and this marks our entry into longer-running episodic network content. Our team has put a huge amount of effort into this series. We hope that it all pays off while strengthening our partnership with Mediacorp,” said Bryan Choo, TSL’s Managing Director.
“We wanted to explore the fundamental ideas of relationships – what does it mean to love and to sacrifice oneself for another? The setting of The Algorithm is juxtaposed against our current society to present the extreme opposite in hopes of creating more conversations around finding the perfect one,” said Lim Seng Jueh, who directed the series alongside producers Jeslene Chia, Jereld Ang, and Director of Photography, Bolin Chen.
As a hyperlocal content creation platform, TSL hopes to continue pushing boundaries and channel positive messaging through our projects. The Algorithm represents the start of TSL’s breakthrough in large-scale production and honing the craft of local talents.
The Algorithm also follows the success of previous TheSmartLocal web drama series Alternate Beginnings, a tale that follows a seemingly fairy-tale marriage with something more sinister happening in the background.
All episodes of The Algorithm are available now on meWATCH and Drama-Mediacorp’s YouTube channel. The series airs every Tuesday at 9.30PM on Mediacorp Channel 5. Episodes will also be made available on TheSmartLocal’s YouTube channel from September 2021.
Alongside the series, TSL has also released “Before We Lose It All”, the theme song for this production as an Original soundtrack (OST) on Spotify and Apple Music. The official music video will be launched on 27th September 2021. The cast also ran an exclusive The Algorithm AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on TSL’s Discord community to great success.
